Monkey Town Brewing – Chattanooga, TN

After our below freezing hike at Savage Gulf State Park, we were ready for a warm brewery and a good beer. The original plan was to go to Sequatchie Valley Brewing Company, which is just a 23 minute drive from Palmer in Dunlap, Tennessee. However, I did not realize until after our hike that they are closed on Sundays. But no worries, because next time we go to Savage Gulf, this will be our after hike brewery! If you are in the area, definitely check them out!

So, the next closest city with breweries was Chattanooga. It was about an hour drive, but that was okay for us since we had to drive back through Chattanooga to get home. We chose Cherry Street Brewing, which has locations in Alpharetta and Cumming, Georgia. We did not know they had a Chattanooga location. But unfortunately the day we visited, it was literally their last day open. They had permanently closed just two hours before we arrived.

Disappointed but not defeated, we went back to the drawing board and chose Monkey Town Brewing Company, which has three locations. We went to the Chattanooga location. Monkey Town gets its name from the Scopes Monkey Trial, aka The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. This famous trial took place in Dayton, TN, which is one of the locations of the brewery.

Beer Menu Monkey Town Brewing Chattanooga TN - Trails & Tap

When you go into Monkey Town, there is a bar counter where you order a drink and start your tab. After you get your drink, you can walk into the dining area and choose your own seat. Monkey Town serves food. Jesse got a Philly Cheesesteak with fries and I got a fried chicken sandwich with corn nuggets. The food here was so good! We are used to food trucks at Georgia breweries (which honestly can be so hit or miss) and so it was nice to have really yummy food to go with our beer.

Jesse and I ordered three beers a piece. Monkey Town had 15 beers and 1 seltzer on tap, each with a fun name. They also sold other drinks, such as Coors, Miller, Jack Daniels, etc. I ordered a Belgian witbier called Witty-Witty Bang Bang, a gingersnap winter warmer ale called Fraggle-Stick Car, and a German pilsner called How’s the Weather Up There? Jesse ordered a doppelbock called Baby Got Bock!, a Mexican lager called You Boy’s Like Mex-Y-Co?, and the English brown called Brown N Out. We liked all of the beers, but our favorites were the You Boy’s like Mex-Y-Co? and How’s the Weather Up There? But first place would definitely be the German pilsner! Something about it just tasted so good and refreshing. Sometimes you just find a simple but excellent beer – this was one of them.

We 1000% recommend visiting Monkey Town if you find yourself in Chattanooga. Monkey Town has yummy food, great beer, a family friendly atmosphere, and really friendly staff. We can’t wait to stop by again!

Happy Trails!
Katie & Jesse
