Allatoona Pass Memorial Field

The Allatoona Pass Battlefield Memorial Field pays tribute to all who fought here, both Union and Confederate.

One of the most interesting parts of the Allatoona Pass Battlefield Historic Site is the Memorial Field. This small but impactful field located at the Allatoona Pass trailhead and is very well worth taking time to explore. History of the American Civil War is very apparent throughout the site, and the Memorial Field is very much proof of what took place during the fateful battle in October of 1864.

This article is intended to focus on the battlefield site’s Memorial Field with photos and a list of resources. For more information about the beautiful Allatoona Pass Historic Site and hiking trail, click here.

Allatoona Pass boasts a rich Civil War legacy. In 1862, the audacious Andrews’ Raid, now legendary as the Great Locomotive Chase, unfolded here. Two years later, on October 5th, 1864, the ground witnessed one of the war’s fiercest clashes, following the fall of Atlanta. Over 30% of the roughly 5,000 soldiers involved were lost as casualties. Today, the battlefield stands silent but evocative, with preserved earthworks, trenches, informative panels, and monuments honoring the soldiers. The Memorial Field pays tribute to all who fought here, both Union and Confederate.

While this Trails & Tap writer was reading and photographing the Memorial Field on a late March day, I was reminded of how terrible the American Civil War was. How much of a toll it took on the American people, and how that toll is a grim reminder of what has happened in recent years. History, indeed, repeats itself.
