You Might Think It Is Someone’s Eclectic Farmhouse

In April 2026, Jesse and I revisited a favorite camping destination of ours: Rock Island State Park in Rock Island Tennessee. During our camping trip, we took a break from hiking and made the 30 minute drive over to Sparta. Located right in the middle of Sparta’s farmland is a red, hodgepodged farmhouse-like building. If you drive by it, you might think it is someone’s eclectic farmhouse. But actually, it is Calfkiller Brewing Company.

The Large Outdoor Seating Area is Ideal for Dogs

Calfkiller Brewing is located close to the Calfkiller River, which flows through Sparta. It is not a river front brewery, but it doesn’t matter – there is tons to see here. Once you park, you can really take in the sights of Calfkiller. In front of the brewery is a large outdoor area with high top seating, a porch area, and a fire pit. The large outdoor seating area is ideal for dogs. This isn’t a normal outside patio though – this feels like you are at a friend’s house drinking in the front yard. Plenty of trees shade the yard area. String lights and good landscaping give the yard a homey and familiar feeling.

If You are Visiting After a Hike, Try the Golden Calf

On the inside, it feels like you are stepping into someone’s living room and kitchen that has been converted to a bar counter. During our visit, there were only four beers on tap. It seems like Calfkiller wants to focus on having a few really good beers compared to having 25 on tap that are so-so. While we visited, we tried the Golden Calf, a light golden ale with an ABV of 4.5%. Jesse also tried the Classic Stout, which has an ABV of 6%. Both beers were great. If you are visiting after a hike, I would recommend the Golden Calf. It is light and crisp and won’t weigh you down after sweating your butt off on the trail!

We really liked Calfkiller when we visited. It is not a normal brewery. If it feels like you have gone over to your friend’s cool house and you are going to have a good beer with them in the front yard. When we went in the spring, the weather was breezy and warm. If this place was near my house, I would be there all the time! Next time you are in Sparta (or anywhere near it), check out Calfkiller Brewing Company!

Happy Trails!
Katie & Jesse
