Elijah Clark State Park
Elijah Clark State Park is located on Clarks Hill Lake, which is actually a part of the Savannah River
In late May, Jesse and I loaded up the pups, hitched up the camper, and took a trip across the state to Elijah Clark State Park. Elijah Clark State Park is located on Clarks Hill Lake, which is actually a part of the Savannah River. This state park is also located on Georgia’s Freshwater Coast. On the Georgia side of the lake, it is called Clarks Hill Lake. But on the South Carolina side of the lake, it is called Lake Strom Thurmond/J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir.
This was our first time visiting Elijah Clark State Park. Back in November 2024, we camped at Mistletoe State Park (35 minutes away), but that is really the only time we have camped on the Eastern side of Georgia. This region of Georgia was hit hard by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Even though we went in May 2025, this park is still recovering from the hurricane. However, the only thing that you can tell that is affected is that all of the trails are closed. Because we couldn’t go hiking, this article will focus on the campground. Don’t worry though, there is still plenty to do at this park!
Elijah Clark State Park is named after Elijah Clarke, a Revolutionary War patriot
Elijah Clark State Park is named after Elijah Clarke, a Revolutionary War patriot. Elijah Clarke actually fought at the important Battle of Kettle Creek during the Revolution. On the park property is a replica “dog trot” cabin, which is what Elijah Clarke built for his own family after the war. Elijah Clarke and his wife Hannah Arrington Clarke were re-entered at the park. You can visit their graves, too. If you are a history buff, especially a Georgia history buff, you will enjoy reading about and seeing these parts of the park!

Our campsite at Elijah Clark State Park was absolutely amazing
You might be reading this and thinking, “Okay, there are tons of campgrounds on lakes – what’s the big deal about this place?” Clarks Hill Lake is 71,000 acres. We have camped on other lakes, like Allatoona, but I was not expecting just how big this one would be! Our campsite was absolutely amazing. We were able to get a site right on the water. The site was wide open and just above the water. I love camping on a lake, but what makes this place different from Allatoona? There is so much open space on the lake. I like being on open water instead of on a cove. It really felt like a getaway because it was so different than the lakes we are used to at home.
With miles of shoreline, there are so many places to explore on the lake. We took our kayaks out and found different spots to hang out. We even found a little secluded beachy area to fish off of. There are tons of boats on this lake. Some campers brought their boats and were able to park them right in the water by their campsite. The park also has designated boat trailer parking.

This is a huge park – it has 182 campsites and 20 cottages
What about the campground itself? Our campsite was right on the water, but it was also a very short walk to the bathroom. Bathrooms were clean. The campsites were very large and spaced out. This is a huge park: It has 182 campsites and 20 cottages. This is also a busy park, however you still feel far enough away from other campers. The staff in the Visitors Center were extremely helpful and friendly! There is also mini golf and a playground at the park. Fishing was good (for Jesse at least, ha ha). And of course, this is a great place for swimming, whether off the beach or your own campsite.

Elijah Clark State Park is directly across from South Carolina. What is located in South Carolina? A really great brewery called Sled Dawg! Sled Dawg Brewery is located in Greenwood, SC. This is 45 miles away from the state park. This might sound discouraging; however, Elijah Clark is located a decent distance from a lot of places. If you have time on your trip, hop in the car and take the drive through scenic farmland to Greenwood.
Happy Trails!
Katie and Jesse
